Temporomandibular Joint Dysfunction Therapy

Pain occurring unilaterally or bilaterally in the ear area often indicates temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction. In such cases, the fabrication of TMJ splints is necessary.

What is a TMJ Splint?

A TMJ splint is indicated for all patients experiencing dysfunction and pain associated with the temporomandibular joint. During your visit, our doctors will determine if this type of therapy is needed.

TMJ dysfunctions can be caused by:

  • Grinding or clenching teeth
  • Rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis
  • Stress
  • Joint dislocation
  • Jaw, head, and neck injuries

What are the Symptoms of TMJ Dysfunction?

Various symptoms may be associated with TMJ dysfunctions. Muscle pain involved in chewing and/or in the joint is most common. Other frequently present symptoms include:

  1. Radiating pain from the joint to the face, jaw, or neck;
  2. Stiffness of chewing muscles;
  3. Limitation of lower jaw movement or inability to perform certain movements;
  4. Change in the position/relationship of upper and lower teeth;
  5. Painful “clicking” of the joint during mouth opening and closing.

Within our team, we have doctors specialized in the therapy of TMJ dysfunctions. Typically, a splint is obtained in one day. First, the doctor takes an impression of your teeth, sends them to the laboratory, where they are individually made from the most advanced foils designed for TMJ dysfunction therapy.
